Teaching Comprehension Strategies with favorite April Literature!

Teaching comprehension can be so much fun using favorite literature pieces that fit with the month.

April features ecology (Earth Day) and one of my favorite's is 10 Things I can do to help my World...by Melanie Walsh
Strategies are Author's Purpose, KWL, and Background Knowledge.
Look at the colorful skill cards for posting AND there are teacher directions in the packet.

Next and Then It's Spring by Julie Fogliano.
It's focus is Main Idea, Cause and Effect, Sequencing.

This book is SOOOOOO cute...Garden Wigglers...all about WORMS!
It focuses on Summarizing, Inferences, and making Predictions.

 
You'll want to start April with Arthur's April Fool by Marc Brown.
The focus here is Friend or Bully.
Students will compare and contrast, define, and make a decision about what the action is.


The packet ends with a connections page that fits with ANY piece of literature.




The Night Before St. Patrick's Day!

The perfect book companion for this delightful story.
Perfect for making Text to Self connections.

Wang has created a story for "the Night Before" for just about every holiday.

I adore this delightful leprechaun and he would look perfect topping of this writing page.

Word work includes vocabulary for posting, a word search, a vocabulary match, and syllables.

Story companions include sequencing events, story elements, story recall (text to self), and How to Catch a Leprechaun.

There is a color and labels, list things that are green and writing about a leprechaun.

The packet ends with three math games.
Subtraction to 10, Addition to 12, and odd and even.

I love using poetry with my class!
It is another way to support reading and vocabulary.

If You Give a Mouse A Brownie

YES...a brand new Laura Numeroff story!
So much fun as a literary companion.

I think your class will love the activities I have prepared to accompany this story.
A cute craft and page topper.

The vocabulary cards are colorful and can be used for sequencing or posting.
Word work includes:  syllables, parts of speech, ABC order, word search


And how about a BROWNIE day?
Give each child a brownie.
Bring in toppings (ice cream, whip cream, sprinkles, chocolate, and cherries)
What will your kiddos top their brownie with and then they write about it.
There is also a data collection sheet for which topping they like best.

For writing practice there are "how to" activities.

Comprehension includes...sequencing, summarizing, cause and effect, favorite part.

Ben Franklin

Ben Franklin was a famous American.
He is known for his writing, inventions, and leadership.
This packets allows students the opportunity to read, write and learn more about this special American Hero.

Before beginning the mini lessons I suggest you read this Now and Ben by Gene Barretta.
What an amazing story about Ben Franklin!
There are three acuities to accompany this story or that can be used without it.

Creating a timeline helps student's understand the progression of his life.
