Happy Halloween to all!

As I walked into my classroom this morning I thought...enter at your own risk!  The day should prove to be CRAZY as every Halloween is.  I hope I have the energy to see it through!  BUT with my handy "Trick or Treat" packet in hand I feel sure there will be enough enriching activities to get me through the day with a little learning taking place too!  Happy day to you all!!

Go Away Big Green Monster!

What fun we had with Go Away Big Green Monster.  Our "monster cakes" turned out so cute and the kiddos had so much fun making them. There is a cute link on uTube follows with an adorable song...Go Away Big Green Monster.  We really got into singing it! Go Away

I then used Smilebox to put pictures of the kiddos frosting, singing and creating.  I immediately sent it to the parents so they feel a part of the day!  If you don't have Smilebox it is so worth the investment.  I love it.  So easy to post on your Websites too!

Monday, Monday...

Well the weather has certainly got everyone buzzing!  It is scary listening to all the tales and I am saying a silent prayer for the safety of all who are in the path of the storm.  I had recess duty this morning and believe me it was not "treat"...in fact I thought it was a "trick" as the wind chill was 28 degrees.  Brrrrr! Since I forgot my camera tonight (today Go Away Big Green Monster and tomorrow Room On the Broom) I will post my new unit instead and a freebie.  Look tomorrow for pictures and updates of our two days prior to Halloween.

Friday "freebie"!!

With Autumn here in the North it is always fun to do a little something special with leaves.  I created a packet for my classroom that gets a little of every  curriculum area in and really hits the Common Core Standards...BANG! It also has a cute little craft for display.  Enjoy your weekend everyone.  I think I'll go on a "leaf hunt"!
And for the "freebie"

Haunted House

Okay so the houses are green.  Maybe they are covered with moss from being old and in the woods.  To be honest I just didn't have any brown construction paper which concerns me because it is only the start of November! we used a ghost, pumpkin and bat sponge to paint on the house.  They turned out cute.

Drying in our "haunted hall"!

Yikes it's Thursday...and the drawing is tomorrow!

We had so much fun with Splat today!  By the way it is a "freebie" at my store.
Splat
And then created these adorable cats and pumpkins!
The story had some wonderful vocabulary for us to explore.

But the best ever was the "How many seeds in a pumpkin?"
Day one we scooped and sorted seeds.
Day two we counted.
Two groups counted by 10, two by 5 and two by 2's.
Amazing but the counts were very similar.
The great big one had 456.
The fat middle one had 438,
The tall middle one had 386.
The two small ones had 420 some.
BUT the surprise is the 4th pumpkin from the big one which is really the smallest had 524.
I would recommend this book and activity to all!
I'd love to share pictures of the actual counting and scooping but they all have kids in them.
See you tomorrow for the drawing.

Finally Friday! and a "freebie"

Hmm no full moon here and still is was a "chat" till you drop kind of week for my kiddos.  Yikes they never quieted down!  In between chatting we did get a little something done and absolutely loved learning a little something about pumpkins.  Tuesday we are going to "scoop and count" so the pictures should be adorable.
I hope to capture the looks on their faces as they reach the inside.  Descriptive words required...
So today was day one of Pumpkin Mania! If you scroll down you will also see a fabulous link for interactive pumpkin activities for kids and you "freebie"!

I used this to evaluate the pumpkin stories they wrote.

Columbus Day and a "freebie"...

So I start today asking the students to write one thing they know about Christopher Columbus.
He has a hat.
He lives in a house.
He had a boat.
Seriously they had no clue.
Finally one little girl says, "I know that he came from Spain."

Hey it was a start.  And so our day began.  Actually it was nice not having them know too much because by the end of the day they could share lots of facts with me!
Love Scholastic News.  Their new "white board" ability makes it worth every penny.
We started with the video they have.  Then "explored" what is an explorer.

Following that we used this mini book for our "read to self" during  our literacy centers.

In our word work we practiced ABC order with Columbus words.

Ah ha...notice we knew nothing to start.  Lots of book choices for  "self selected reading".

During "listen to reading" we listened about Christopher Columbus.

And writing...we focused on Christopher Columbus was...wanted.

And here is our "nifty" craft.  The ship sails around the world.

Best children's program yet for computer...BBC Columbus.
