Veterans Day Activities, Games and Crafts

Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11th.
It is a special day to say THANK YOU to those who served in our military.
It is a terrific opportunity for students who have families serving in the military to share.
The two books below are wonderful for sharing on this day.

I love this little craft that can  be used as a page topper as students reflect on what they are able to do because of the efforts our veterans have made.
Informational text is plentiful.
There are three differentiated forms followed by graphic organizers for collecting key facts.

There are colorful vocabulary cards to help students recognize all the different parts of our military.
These are followed by word work to place in your literacy center of to develop a deeper understanding of the meaning.
Students can also write.
And there are two adorable math games for partners to play.
Finally I like to use the true/false for assessment at the end of the day.

Parent Teacher Conference Favorites!

It is that time of the year when parent teacher conferences are just around the corner.
This packet contains a number of suggestions and activities that will hopefully make these important forms of communication a success.
Start with scheduling.
Don't forget to give yourself a break.
Print extra schedules so you can put one outside your door and another by your side to keep you on track.
Before the conference send a note to parents with a reminder of the time they are scheduled for and important information about the conference and why these face to face meetings are so important.
On a creative note have students write a note to their parents and have parents write the students as well.
This is a great page to prepare ahead of time to put your talking points down.
What are student strengths?
What are areas to focus on?
What are the goals for the next grading period?
Give parents a SNAPSHOT of the progress their child is making.  You can do this by using specific scores and work samples.

Each lesson starts with a grammar lesson with practice activities.
This packet focuses on proper nouns and plural nouns.
I encourage the students to use these skills in their writing.
Next a read aloud is shared with the class.
Discussion follows and then the students use the graphic organizers to gather their thoughts for writing.
The next step is to have students prepare a "sloppy copy" of their thoughts and EDIT them.
These are then placed on a final write page for showcasing.
