October is Fire Safety Month!

October is Fire Safety Month.
It is the perfect time to discuss fire safety with your class as well as discuss the firefighter as ann important community helper.
Look at this cutie and the vocabulary for posting.

This packet has two poems that give students tips on fire safety as well as being prepared for a fire.

These are followed by an informational text mini book on firefighters and comprehension activities.

There are so many wonderful pieces of literature available on fires, fire safety, and firefighters.
Students will enjoy reading or listening to these informative stories.
Each story has a follow up activity to accompany it.

There are also activities for gathering information and setting up for successful writing.

Word work is included with making words, spinning for a word, word search, and ABC Order.
These are ideal for literacy centers.

Finally there are three math games that enhance skill building.

Grandparents Day!!

I just LOVE Grandparents and Grandparents Day!!
In my class each year we invite our grandparents for lunch.
If a child does not have a grandparent that can attend we welcome them to invite someone else!
Having Grandparents visit is also a special way to compare and contrast the past and present as well as look at generations and families.

The packet has vocabulary for posting and a simple HUG craft for students to make for their visitors.

There is also a Grandparent Interview and a chance to fill in posters about their grandparents.
These can be used as ideas for enhancing writing.

This is a cute song about grandparents and then it is followed by two writing activities using are, can, have...
Simple sentences can be written using these words and ideas.

There is a class book cover for their writing, differentiated writing pages and a page for them to do 'selfies' with their grandparents.  These are so cute for posting.

There is a mini book for putting together on Grandparents which the students can interact with.
It is followed by a writing activity making a list.

Differentiated word work is also included on a word search, ABC Order and Parts of Speech.

I use two of my favorite stories for comprehension.
What Grandmas and Grandpas Do Best by Numeroff and How To Babysit Grandma and Grandpa by Reagan.  Your class will love the stories and the activities that accompany them.

Then be sure to include Grandparents Day.
There is an invitation as well as an activity for the class to do with their grandparents comparing the classroom today to the classroom the grandparent attended.
I also love giving rewards for the grandparent who traveled the farthest, had the most grandchildren, etc.
What a fabulous way to find out about the guests.

Rules and Safety with Officer Buckle and Friends!

I like to begin every school year with a study on Rules and Safety.
This packet uses some of my favorite literature to support this theme.
Officer Buckle
Recess Queen
Kindness is Cooler
What if Everybody
Check out the adorable crafts!!

It starts with a review of what are the rules in the classroom.

That is followed by posters of the class rules and then a review...is this kind? is this safe?

We also look at making wise choices and what is a recess friend vs a recess bully.

I also love talking about kindness.
This to me is KEY to a cooperative classroom.
I always ask...is that kind?
If yes then by all means follow through!

Officer Buckle allows for some great opportunities to get the class writing and illustrating rules they hope to follow.  I love creating a bulletin board using the craft and the stars.
Run these on yellow paper.

There is a game for partners or small groups and for more advanced student a response sheet.

Recess Queen activities include who is a friend or a bully and describing the characters in the story.
Through character identification we also get a clear picture of acceptable and not acceptable behaviors.
