A "yummie" Friday Freebie!!

As I was going back through some old files I found this neat activity.  I immediately thought it would be a fabulous treat for the end of our Arctic/Antarctic Units.  So...off to the grocery I went.  Low and behold they are no longer called an Eskimo Pie BUT they were 2 boxes for $5.00 and there were 12 in each box.  What a deal!  I came home and redid the activity sheet.  Tomorrow will be a "sweet" treat.
Enjoy the little activity to go with the ice cream treat!  Michele

Our exploration began today.  The entire week will focus on informational text and writing reports.  Today each child chose an animal to report on.  Stay tuned...

These are the information collecting sheets the students will be using.

A favorite Arctic story on animal babies.

We will use this in the computer lab tomorrow.

Groundhog Prediction "freebie"!

It's that time when the furry little fellow gets ready to peek out.  Have fun with your class predicting this week and building data collection skills.  Michele

Penguins and a freebie!

We are off to the South Pole the next three days to explore the life of the penguin.  Our lesson began with the mini book from the Penguin packet and a classroom globe.  National Geographic has a marvelous 3 minute video about Penguins.  We made fancy little penguins and discovered three details about this special bird.  (This is the freebie).  This unit is helping my 1st graders to "dive into" informational text.  Follow along this week and check it out.  Michele

Check out our "rookery"!!

Martin Luther King "freebie"

After a day off for MLK Day we woke this morning to a Late Start.  Temperatures were below zero and there was a dusting of snow.  It is a treat as it allows me some time to organize before the kiddos come roaring in!  This morning we will discuss Dr. King and this afternoon focus on The Crayon Box that Talked.
At the end of the day we will bring the two themes together.  I am posting three of the pages I am using today.  The font is not as cute because it is blocked on my computer here at school but not bad.  So enjoy!! Michele

Friday "freebie"...

I have been thinking what I could leave with you for this three day weekend freebie.  I have decided on this!
Today was the final day of our quarter and needless to say most of my weekend will be spent organizing assessments and recording information in our Progress Reports.  They are Standards based which really makes assessment clear!  I did create this packet though at the beginning of the year that has really helped me assess ELA portion of OUR progress report.  I do think you will see some connections though. The complete packet is larger but this is just a 6 page sample for you!  Enjoy the weekend everyone.  Michele

A cold day here...and a "freebie"!

It is cold here so our snowman theme is perfect.  I wanted to post for you some delightful activities we did in class.  The favorite was:  We read All You Need To Make A Snowman
In the story the friends built a snowman and a snowman friend.  So following the story we got with a friend an together the kiddos "spun for a snowman".  It was so cute.  When we were done we collected our data on how many of each item we spun.  Very cute.  It is in my Balanced Literacy with a Snowman Theme packet but for you, my followers, it is a freebie! (The font is not as cute because I am not on my home computer.  Sorry!)
And...just another cute snowman idea!  For my warmer weather folks how about a snowman with sunglasses and flip flops!  Even a sun hat would be so cute.  Michele

The Mitten...and a "freebie"

Today we shared The Mitten.  In digging through my supplies I found these amazing story telling materials that a mother made for me years back.  Her daughter is now an engineer with a baby and I don't think Jan Brett had even been written yet.  The children loved playing with them though and retelling the story.
Tomorrow cookies and shhhh...but our surprise visitor Monday is going to be a real, live hedgehog.  I'm so excited!! Below are the "freebies" if you are interested.  To see pictures of our class graphs look at the quick minute long shows posted from the last two days.  So much fun!  Can't wait to show you pictures of the hedgehog.  Michele

Jan Brett and the Hat

What a wonderful day we had.
It began with us writing in our journals about which we would choose...hat/earmuffs.
Each child had to share a reason why and then add an illustration.
Following that we made a wonderful class graph using hats and earmuffs.  It is hanging in the hall.
This concluded with us writing about our data.  We discovered 14 kiddos picked hats and 8 kiddos picked earmuffs.  We dug even deeper and discovered that only 2 boys liked earmuffs and only 3 girls like hats.  Hmmm!
We ended our reading with a wonderful sequence activity.  The class had to recall the title of the story, the characters and then the author and illustrator.  Using the sequence page we took this information put it in order.
We focused on the numbers first, second, third...
Tomorrow The Mitten.  We will be making mitten cookies.  Look for the pictures. Michele
Sorry no "freebie" tonight.  Just too busy and getting ready for progress reports again.  Ugh!!

Math Fact Practice..."equals" a freebie!

I am really going to push math facts when we return next week so I created some game boards to use in centers, indoor recess and at home with families.  I plan to get some mini marshmallows for markers and let the kiddos have a little fun while practicing.  Here is the complete packet and then a little freebie for you!

There are 11 actual pages of games and number grids for checking answers.  Below are two examples.
Hope you like.  Michele
