I love the word searches as they really do support visual practice for reading.
They also support vocabulary development.
After the word search is complete have the students pick one or more of the words and...
use them in a sentence
write a definition for them
draw pictures of them
I put mine on the white board and we correct them together by students one at a time coming up and highlighting the word.
Creating the mini book is super simple...
fold like a hot dog and then fold in half again
No cutting or pasting.
I pair students early on, a strong learner with a reluctant reader.
Using highlighters I have students highlight key vocabulary as we read or key details.
Because the book belongs to the student they can read and reread.
Color the pictures.
Open the book up and on the back write or draw about the main idea or place a question on the board.
Students answer it using the text in the booklet.
Both the word searches and the mini books are perfect for centers.
You're right. Word searches keep adding skills at every age too.
