The Distance Learning Resource begins with informational text about THE BEACH.

The student activity asks students to use the text to recall information.

Next students read about what people might do at the beach.

The student activity asks students to write an narrative about what they would do if they had a day at the beach.  Sequencing is encouraged.

Descriptive words or adjectives are explored.  

What can you think of that describes sunshine or the ocean water?

Students are then asked to write an opinion piece telling how they feel about a sunny day at the beach.

Writing complete sentences are stressed.

Students look at the beach item and write a complete sentence about each one.

Using Informational Text to Read and Write...Christopher Columbus

Using informational text about current events is one way to embed cross curricular learning.

The packet has reading, writing, word work, and a math game to build and entire day of learning.

This packet begins with a mini book telling the story of Christopher Columbus.

I love using this for guided reading.  As we read I have students highlight key vocabulary and important text. Then students can read and reread using the text to answer comprehension questions, gather key facts for writing, and  build strong vocabulary.

Below look at the two wonderful activities to create.

One is a topper to showcase student writing.

The second is a ship to sail AROUND the world.

I also shared three pieces of literature I like to have available in the classroom.

Here are two pieces of informational text as well as a TRUE/FALSE to use for assessment.

There are also graphic organizers for students to gather key details from the text.

You will love the TIME LINE about Christopher Columbus.

 This wonderful poem is perfect for using text to build comprehension.

SCOOT is a fun game to get your students moving and cooperating.

Students partner up.  Read the fact on the desk and together decide if it is TRUE or FALSE.  They remain at that station until you say SCOOT.  At that point they move to the next fact.

We then correct these together so we can correct the ones that were FALSE.

I am a firm believer in developing students with a strong vocabulary.

So I have provided plenty of WORD WORK for literacy centers and VOCABULARY cards for posting.  I encourage student to read and write using these words.

The packet contains graphic organizers for students to gather their thoughts and write meaningful paragraphs to create an informational piece.
