Using Informational Text for Reading and Writing...Bats and Spiders

This time of the year I love using bats and spiders to engage students in READING informational text  and then WRITING using the information found in the text.
Your class will go BATTY!!

Along with using the informational text found in the packet each topic matches these wonderful pieces of literature easily found and to be placed in the classroom.
I like to use a mini word chart and put the vocabulary cards in it along with the reading materials for students.

And if you have not see the Are you a... series, these books are fabulous for young readers.

I love the simple crafts to create a bulletin board or to hang on student lockers.

The packet also contains a little math.  Students can complete patterns and do some data collection.

The informational text is found in a mini book with 8 pages of text.
These should be used for GUIDED READING.  As we read I have students HIGHLIGHT key words in the text.
Following reading I have students put key details on the graphic organizers.
There is also a TRUE/FALSE test to use for assessment on what they comprehended.
We correct them and then students write the correct answer on the FALSE lines.

Following the reading we use all we learned to write INFORMATIVE pieces.
The graphic organizers are very helpful in teaching students to develop meaningful paragraphs.
There is one for informative writing and another for OPINION.
The final write pages are differentiated to meet the needs of every level writer in your classroom.

Word work is also included.
There are definitions...again I allow students to use their mini book of informational text to answer these.
Syllables using the key vocabulary words and then a Let's Make Words.
Not shown here is a word search using this vocabulary.
These activities are ideal for your literacy center.
