Using Informational Text to Read and Write...Fire Safety!

October is Fire Safety month. Take a day and share facts about fire safety with your class.  This packet is filled with informational text and activities that encourage reading, word work and writing.
Use this topic as a springboard to teach using a cross curricular structure.

I love the little page topper to showcase student writing.
And vocabulary is also included. The colorful vocabulary cards are perfect for posting.  Students can use them for writing, reading or identifying them in their text.
Word work is focused on these words and ideal for placing in a literacy center.
I enjoy using the Let's Make Words as a class experience.  Divide the students into groups.
Assign a secretary and have students in each group make as many words as they can.
When complete see which group has made the most.

These two poems are ideal for reading and then using the text to answer questions:
BE SAFE  BE PREPARED!!
The little mini PRINT, FOLD, READ are filled with informational text and require no cutting or pasting for early readers.

The mini book is ideal for guided reading.
As you read together highlight key words and facts.
Read and reread.
There is a comprehension activity and an assessment using TRUE/FALSE.

Graphic organizers are available for using text to record key information.

Here are three of my favorite literature pieces to use with the classroom.
Each story has comprehension activities to accompany the story.
My favorite is NO DRAGONS FOR TEA.

Pre write pages are available to support writing an informative paragraph.
Three differentiated final write pages are included.
A mini book with informational text is provided about Firefighters.
This is followed by a label me and a cut and paste FIRE SAFETY page.
Also three math games that encourage addition.

  1. Hi Michele, I think these books on Fire Safety for first graders are very informative, engaging, and cute! Our firm is one of the top Ups battery dealers in Chennai, and I have two young children who love pictorial books. If I could procure these books for them, it would be great!
